The 5-story 154,000square-foot structural steel building will house full-motion flight simulators, fixed training devices, computer rooms, offices, classrooms, and a fourth-floor exterior employee lounge. To accommodate the 40 ft tall flight simulator bays, long-span composite girders and tall, slender columns at the building’s base were implemented. The building utilizes multi-tiered concentric braced frames for the structure’s lateral force-resisting system and drilled piers at the foundation. The HCL team overcame great challenges relating to a fast-track design-build schedule. To reduce the construction schedule, field welds were completely eliminated by designing fully bolted connections. Additionally, prefabricated wall panels were implemented to save additional construction schedules. Fast-tracking the structure enabled sections of the building to open earlier, allowing pilot training to begin ahead of substantial completion.
Project Highlights
The new design-build expansion to the United Airlines Flight Training Center (FTC), already the largest of its kind in the world, will serve a critical role in United Airlines’ goal of hiring an additional 10,000 pilots by 2030.
