Structural Engineering

The structural design team at HCL has over 55 combined years of experience in the industry. They work closely with owners, architects, and builders to produce the most economical solutions to engineering challenges both during construction and for long-term building use. We emphasize cost effectiveness while maintaining the long term goal of a safe, buildable, affordable, and attractive design. Our structural design team provides design, inspection, and rehabilitation services for all projects, big and small. Our experience ranges from elaborate office and industrial buildings, to major highway and rail structures. We work closely with our clients to provide a unique and individual service to bring the design from the schematic drawing board all the way through construction reality.

Building Design

Our professional staff is involved in every phase of design, from conceptual design to construction administration. Our leadership and expertise allow us to offer invaluable input to solve many engineering challenges early in the design process creating cost-efficient solutions for our clients.

New Design

The structural engineers at HCL offer a broad spectrum of architectural engineering services to both public and private clients including:

  • Education and Institutional
  • Municipal and Infrastructure
  • Residential and Mixed-Use
  • Office, Retail, and Industrial
  • Federal and Military
  • Airport Facilities

Denver PoliceThe structural engineers at HCL have extensive design experience of steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures. We are also extremely knowledgeable of both shallow and deep foundation systems. Our resume includes projects ranging from single-family residential homes to multi-million dollar high-rise buildings.

Additions & Modifications

Due to the rising cost of real estate and construction, we are seeing more and more clients choosing to renovate and retrofit existing buildings. HCL designs structural modifications to dozens of buildings each year. These include modifying floor and roof framing for new loading conditions, designing additions as our clients’ needs change and grow, and bringing buildings up to current ADA and code standards. Our renovation portfolio includes small projects like warehouses and single family homes as well as larger projects such as airport terminals.

Bridge Design

Liberty Blvd BridgeHCL provides extensive services related to the design, rehabilitation, inspection, and load rating of both simple and complex bridges, railroad structures, drainage structures, and the design of retaining walls and sound walls. Whether it is a component of a large engagement, or a standalone design, our cross-disciplined approach balances the needs of our clients with the impact on the community and surrounding environment.

We provide complete design services including:

  • Feasibility Studies
  • Conceptual/Schematic Design
  • Final Design (Plans, Specifications, and Estimates)
  • Construction Support Services

HCL’s bridge engineers have design experience with both pedestrian and vehicular bridges. They have designed various types of bridges including:

  • Reinforced Concrete
  • Prestressed Concrete
  • Post-tensioned Concrete
  • Steel Plate and Box Girders
  • Concrete and Steel Piling Substructures

We have the capabilities to design and detail bridge superstructures, substructures, and foundations. Our project experience includes new construction, bridge rehabilitation, and inspection and load ratings of new and existing structures. Our clients include cities and counties, contractors, federal agencies, rail-transit authorities, and state DOTs.

Transportation & Special Structures

The structural engineering team at HCL has worked on a wide variety of transportation and special structure projects including:

  • Retaining Walls
  • Box Culverts
  • Water Storage Tanks
  • Water & Wastewater Tanks and Treatment Facilities
  • Dam Spillways
  • Pump Stations
  • Debris Flow Diversion Structures

Our engineers have also worked on many challenging and unique structural projects for the U.S. Military including heavy industrial facilities as well as marine engineering projects.

Project Delivery

More and more projects are using the design-build delivery method in order to streamline the design and building process without compromising quality. The structural engineering team at HCL has a great deal of experience working closely for and with contractors as the Engineer of Record on multiple projects each year. We pride ourselves on our ability to illustrate these key values in order to make any design-build project a success:

  • Collaboration and teamwork from project start to finish
  • Open and honest communication between design professionals
  • Appreciation for diverse ideas and solutions

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

DIA RevitIn recent years, design professionals and owners are starting to understand how BIM can assist in the delivery of successful projects despite accelerated schedules, limited manpower, and tight budgets. Building Information Modeling goes above and beyond the traditional two-dimensional drawings and extends into the third, fourth, and fifth dimensions (spatial dimensions, time, and cost). Creating 3D models of buildings during design can save time and money by significantly decreasing coordination conflicts between architects, structural engineers, and MEP engineers by identifying exact locations of discrepancies early on in the design phase. Once construction is complete, BIM models can be turned over to building owners to be used for facility operation.

The structural engineering team at HCL has a great deal of experience using AutoDesk Revit Structure alongside architects and MEP engineers on a wide variety of projects, large and small. Whether it’s a small school addition, or a multi-million dollar new structure, HCL has the ability to model and produce drawings in three-dimensions.
